Charity chat for star director’s sister

THE sister of Oscar-winning film director Anthony Minghella chatted with Christian Aid volunteers at a reception at Hull’s Guildhall yesterday.

Loretta Minghella, the director of Christian Aid, recently visited Sierra Leone’s capital Freetown, which is twinned with the city. She said: “I was struck by the shocking levels of poverty – people eating on a zero zero one basis – one meal a day, and some once every other day. We are talking about extreme poverty affecting large swathes of the population, who eat a lot of rice and cassava and not much else.”

Ms Minghella – whose late brother studied and taught at Hull University – paid tribute to people in Hull who supported the charity’s work in the Pujehun area, where half the population don’t have access to clean water or proper sanitation.
