Charity run trophy honours resort's 'slot machine king'

SCARBOROUGH showman Jimmy Corrigan will be remembered in the 10th anniversary year of his death at a charity run in the resort supported by Olympic gold medal winner Sally Gunnell.

A trophy in honour of the slot machine king will be among the prizes in the 2010 McCain Yorkshire Coast 10k Road Race and 2.5k Family Fun Run which Miss Gunnell will start on Sunday October 31.

The McCain Yorkshire Coast 10k encourages runners to come together, get healthy, and raise money for a new track facility for the Scarborough Athletic Club.

Currently the nearest tracks are in Hull, York or Guisborough, leaving hundreds of young people without the facilities they need to fulfil their athletic potential.

A new track will give children in the community the opportunity to enjoy athletics and stand a chance of becoming the next Jessica Ennis or Mo Farrah. The event also supports the RNLI, Marie Curie Cancer Care and Yorkshire Cancer research.

To encourage schools, including teachers, parents and pupils, to take part in the fun run, McCain has created the "Schools challenge". The Jimmy Corrigan

trophy will be awarded to schools with the highest number of participants.

Jimmy Corrigan, the Leeds-born millionaire regarded as much a part of Scarborough as the donkeys and the rock, died just weeks after discovering he was suffering from cancer in 2000.

The flamboyant showman and "slot machine king" was a teetotal fitness fanatic and running partner of the resort's other famous Jimmy, Sir Jimmy Savile.

McCain Athletics Ambassador and former Olympic Champion Sally Gunnell, said: "As a busy mum of three boys I fully understand the pressures of getting the kids outside and active.

"I fully support McCain giving families the opportunity to spend time together and become engaged in physical activity at the McCain Yorkshire Coast 10K and 2.5K Family Fun Run.
