Cheers as regimental colours paraded

A dazzling army spectacle came to York as crowds lined the streets for one of the city's biggest military parade since the Second World War.

More than 1,000 troops marched through the centre on Saturday with colours flying, bayonets fixed and drums beating. All four battalions of the Yorkshire Regiment stood proudly together under new regimental colours, which were presented to the regiment by the Duke of York last Friday. The Ministry of Defence said the parade was second only in size to Trooping the Colour.

Hundreds gathered for the event and cheered and clapped during the march past, which was followed by a service in York Minster to bless the new colours.

The Minster was packed as the troops, many of them who have seen service in the war zones of the Middle East, were joined by loved ones and former service personnel who have served in previous conflicts.
