But Yorkshire can lay claim to the latest victory in the long-held competition with Lancashire which has now taken on a culinary edge to see who makes the best cheese.

The Guild of Fine Food settled the debate when hundreds of buyers and producers took part in tasting sessions at the two-day Harrogate Speciality Food Show which ended yesterday at the Yorkshire Event Centre.

Founder of the Thirsk-based Shepherds Purse Cheeses Judy Bell yesterday secured 120 votes – twice as many as former Coronation Street star Sean Wilson, who played Martin Platt for 20 years and now runs the Saddleworth Cheese Company.
