Children get chance to live history

EAST Yorkshire schoolchildren can don a lifejacket for a 4,000-year-old experience this summer.

The Ferriby Heritage Trust, owners of the half-scale replica of the Bronze Age ship which appeared in the BBC Coast series, says youngsters can make a valuable contribution to research about how she was used in the past.

The Trust will be resuming trials on Welton Waters shortly. The replica, based on remains found in the mud of the Humber foreshore at North Ferriby, proved Bronze Age people could, and did, build seagoing ships.

The Trust is now embarking on the Bronze Age Ship Handling (BASH) project to learn more about its handling with paddles, oars and sail.

The village scouts, who are using the trials as part of their adventure badge training, will now be fitting in evening as well as weekend sessions.

Other youngsters will join in as the programme develops.

Trust chairman Wendy Dobbs said: “If you think about it the average 14-year-old now was probably the height and size of a Bronze Age boatman.”

Applications to take part should be made to Ferriby Heritage Trust on 01482 632650.
