Children hit by cancer to
be honoured

The courage of children with cancer in Yorkshire is to be recognised with a special award as new figures released today offer increased hopes of survival for young patients.

About 140 children are diagnosed with the disease each year in Yorkshire, but more than eight in 10 youngsters with cancer nationally now survive for more than five years compared with just three in 10 in the late 1960s, according to Cancer Research UK.

And three quarters of children now survive for more than 10 years, the charity said as it launched its annual Little Star awards with retailer TK Maxx.

The awards are backed by a host of famous faces, including England footballers James Milner, from Leeds, and Kyle Walker, from Sheffield.

Walker, who also plays for Tottenham Hotspur, said: “It is always a massive honour to recognise the amazing bravery of children who are diagnosed with cancer. As a dad myself I can only imagine how unbearable it must be to watch your child go through such a tough battle.”

Manchester City player Milner added: “The journeys they’ve been through with their families are so tough, yet the positivity they show is incredible. If you know a deserving child please share their inspirational story and nominate them for a Little Star Award.”

Every child nominated will receive a trophy, a certificate signed by celebrity supporters, and a £50 TK Maxx gift card.
