Children invited to join park art project

School pupils in Bradford are being offered a chance to showcase their artwork as part of the development of the city centre's new park.

Bradford Council and Education Bradford are asking young people to "Imagine a City" as part of the scheme to build the 24.4m park in the city centre.

Pupils can submit a range of artwork themed around the City Park and regeneration and the chosen designs will be displayed on the fencing surrounding the site.

Bradford Council this week also launched a series of educational presentations and ideas for schools to use to learn about the project as part of the curriculum. The web-based material, which can be downloaded from the City Park website, contains information on the park's development.

The headteacher of Titus Salt School, Sue Mansfield, said: "We have been working closely with Bradford Council this year and our students have thoroughly enjoyed learning about the City Park. We hosted the city centre masterplan model in our library and our students have shown a lot of interest in the future of their city."

Work is under way on the park which will include a 4,200 square metre mirror pool – the largest city centre water feature in the UK – at its heart.

The park, about the size of four football pitches, will surround the listed City Hall.

It is hoped that work on the park and mirror pool will be completed by next summer.

Bradford Council's executive member for regeneration and economy, Adrian Naylor, said: "Engaging with the city's future residents is paramount to the future success of the city. The educational resources are designed to connect schools and community groups with the exciting changes that are happening in the city centre."
