Chilled pupils make mix of mess in ice cream challenge

Pupils at a leading North Yorkshire prep school licked the recent heatwave by helping a local ice-cream maker come up with tempting new flavours which will be launched at the Great Yorkshire Show.

Each summer term, youngsters at Belmont Grosvenor School in Birstwith, Harrogate, enjoy the weekly Friday Chill Zone when they buy cornets to help boost school funds.

But this year, the school's parent teacher association and Nidderdale-based Birchfield Family Dairies, which supplies the Chill Zone ice-cream, asked pupils to devise some new flavours – with the best three produced by the firm and sold at the school.

The choices were Mix of Mess (raspberries, strawberries and meringue) Chocolate Forest (vanilla ice cream, chocolate muffin, marshmallows and black cherry ripple) and Peachy Pie (peaches, ice cream, marshmallows and digestive chunks). Nine-year-old Henry Exley's Chocolate Forest was voted the best.

The new flavours will be launched at the Great Yorkshire Show in July.
