Chinese speech contest to be staged in UK

LINGUISTS from across the country will descend on Sheffield when a cup to showcase the best Chinese speakers is staged in the UK for the first time.

The Sheffield Confucius Institute (SCI) will host the prestigious Jiangsu Cup Chinese Speech Contest on Sunday. Contestants from the University of Sheffield’s School of Asian Studies and universities in Leeds, Oxford, Cambridge, Nottingham, Glasgow, Newcastle and London South Bank will compete in three different categories.

University of Sheffield graduate Mary-Jess Leaverland, who won the Chinese X Factor and sang to 80,000 football fans at the FA Cup final at Wembley last year, will also perform.
