Chocolate factory site properties up for sale this week

The first homes to be built on the old Terry’s chocolate factory in York go on sale on Saturday.

The new properties, which sit on land in front of the old building, include flats, townhouses and a detached home with prices from £199,995 for a one bedroom apartment to £799,995 for the luxurious four bedroom detached show home.

They have been designed by architects Richards Partington to reflect the factory’s art deco style and include references to the site’s confectionery history

The development is called The Chocolate Works, while one of its apartment buildings is named Neapolitan after the famous box of miniature chocolate bars.

David Wilson Homes is building 319 homes on the site over the next four to five years, and is set to unveil a sculpture commissioned to commemorate one of Terry’s best-loved products.

The chocolate orange made by Sherburn Forge will have pride of place at the heart of the new development.

“We wanted a centrepiece and we had to make a contribution towards public art. We thought a chocolate orange was perfect,” says Paul Newman, managing director of David Wilson Homes, Yorkshire East.

Buyers are already clamouring to secure a home at The Chocolate works, which is in a prime position next to the Knavesmire.

The old factory is being primed for conversion into 173 apartments by Henry Boot Developments.

The site at York had been derelict since the Terry’s factory closed in 2005 under the ownership of Kraft, with the loss of 300 jobs. It originally opened in 1926 but work was scaled back there from the year 2000.
