City artists’ work is put on display alongside Old Master

SKETCHES by two budding artists from Wakefield are now on display at The Hepworth Wakefield, where their talents are on display alongside work by the artist JMW Turner.

Wakefield Bridge c1798 by JMW Turner depicts one of the city’s favourite landmarks, the medieval Chantry Chapel of St Mary the Virgin and is on loan to the The Hepworth, from the British Museum.

Now, the work of Jennifer Payne and Matthew Charlesworth, two participants of the gallery’s recent Chantry Chapel Sketching Project, are exhibited as part of The Hepworth Wakefield’s opening display in the Yorkshire in Pictures Gallery.

Jennifer Payne, an adult learner on a drawing and painting course through the Wakefield Adult and Community Education Service and Matthew Charlesworth, a computer games design student from Wakefield College, both joined the four week sketching project.

Jennifer Payne said yesterday: “I never thought I would see my work on display in a gallery like The Hepworth Wakefield, especially next to an artist like Turner!”

The project was provided by The Hepworth Wakefield in partnership with Wakefield Adult and Community Education Service and Wakefield College. Visit www.hepworthwakefield.org for museum details.
