City councillor suspended over disorder arrest

A councillor arrested on suspicion of violent disorder has been suspended from the Bradford Labour Group

Councillor Abid Hussain, who represents the Keighley Central ward on Bradford Council, is now classed as an independent, following his suspension pending the outcome of a police investigation. The councillor, who was arrested last month over an alleged brawl in Keighley, sits on a number of panels including Bradford Council’s licensing committee.

Five other men, aged 19,18,34, 27 and 30 were arrested in connection with the same disturbance and yesterday remained on police bail.

In a statement Mr Hussain said: “I understand why the Labour Party feels that it has to take the action that it has and I look forward to re-joining the Labour Group when my name is cleared. In the meantime I will continue to serve and represent the interests of the people of Keighley Central.”
