City library ready for centenary celebration

A library in Bradford will celebrate its centenary at the weekend.

Manningham Library was opened in 1910 on the site of the oldest Sunday School in Bradford, which was built in 1832 and was offered to Bradford Corporation in 1883 on the understanding that it would be used as a library.

A new library replaced the old building and a foundation stone was laid on December 28, 1908.

The rebuilt library was the first purpose-built library in the city and the first to include a separate children's room. In 1911 the annual report recorded the children's room was a "complete success".

On July 5, 2009, Manningham Library reopened after a 1.5m Big Lottery funded refurbishment including an extension, meeting room and community garden.

People can learn more about the facility and the history of Manningham at the weekend.

Coun Paul Flowers said: "Manningham Library is and always has been well used by the local community and it is wonderful to celebrate its 100th birthday in the city."A new DVD about Manningham will be shown at midday on Saturday and from 1.30pm people can find out about its history on a short walk. On Sunday there will be face-painting, balloon modelling, a quiz and a visit from Bookstart Bear.
