City sets shining example

York Minster will be a beacon of light for visitors this week as its historic buildings enjoy a colourful makeover.

The Illuminating York Festival has become an annual event, turning some of the city's most recognisable landmarks, including the court room at the Treasurers House, above, into works of art, and this time it is the Minster's turn to become bathed in light and sound.

The festival, now in its sixth year, is the largest yet as Rose, a unique artwork, lights up the south transept.

Created by artists Ross Ashton and Karen Monid, Rose is a 10-minute piece which runs on a continuous loop throughout the night. It was developed using imagery from the York Minster and Museums archive and features a soundtrack of poetry and music.

The Deans Park behind the Minster will house a series of artistic displays, while other attractions around the city are also being transformed.

Visit York chief executive Gillian Cruddas, said: "We're delighted that this year the artists will be using imagery to reflect the spirit of Yorkshire and it is fitting that the Minster's Rose window will be the focus."
