City's tourism agency scoops prestigious European award

YORK'S success in boosting visitor numbers to the world-famous medieval city has been hailed after scooping a new European tourism award.

Visit York, the official tourism agency for the city, beat 1,500 entrants from across Europe to win the award for its promotion of its new state-of-the-art information centre which opened on Museum Street earlier this year and has already attracted 276,000 visitors – up 86 per cent on its previous building.

The award will sit alongside the prestigious European Cities Tourism Award bestowed on the city in 2008, when York scooped the title "best European city".

Kay Hyde, PR manager for Visit York said, "We are thrilled to win this award which once again assists in establishing York on a European stage, showcasing the city to top communications professionals from across Europe.

"We were up against some very high profile names in the communications industry, so this is quite a coup and recognition of the fantastic teamwork that goes into promoting York as a visitor destination."

Visit York used a school art competition, an online quiz and video footage featuring characters from York Theatre Royal's production of the Wind in the Willows to promote its new centre which opened in May.

The awards ceremony was held in Prague on last Thursday.
