Asda recalled a line of baby dungarees yesterday after a piece of the clasp detached from the clothing, the retailer said.

The supermarket chain said two people had complained about the George Baby denim dungarees after a small metal component of the clasp came loose.

No children had been harmed, but the retailer was recalling the entire line “as a precaution”, a spokeswoman said.

The dungarees sold for 8 and were available for babies aged from birth to 24 months.

About 2,000 pairs had been sold over the last five to six weeks.

Asda said in a statement: “We’ve been alerted there’s a problem with our baby denim dungarees and that the stopper on the clasp comes off too easily.

“As the care and safety of our customers is a priority, we have withdrawn all sizes of the product and are recalling the dungarees as a precautionary measure. No other items in our ranges are affected.

“It goes without saying we’re sorry for the inconvenience caused.”

The retailer advised those who had bought the item to return it for a full refund.
