Classic cars help make vintage day out

Spectators at the event at Harewood House, near Leeds, sponsored by the Yorkshire Post, also got the chance to see the Breitling Wingwalkers, who took to the skies to perform an acrobatic routine while strapped to the wings of a 1940s Boeing Stearman biplane at speeds of up to 150mph as the aircraft loops, rolls and stalls.

Hundreds of vintage and classic cars were on view for the public to admire, with prizes given out for the best in class.

A spokesperson for the event said: “It isn’t all about the past, the Classic Car and Motor Show celebrates the new too.”

The Yorkshire Post bus was on site alongside a selection of Yorkshire motor dealerships who showed off their best collection of cars.

This year the event had a vintage theme, with visitors able to find fashions and homeware in the vintage fair and they also had a chance to get themselves glammed up at a vintage hair salon. There was also a chance to learn dance moves from the 1940s with free swing lessons.

Lytham St Annes’ Spitfire Display Team took a replica Spitfire to the event and there was a chance to talk to the re-enactors and get an insight into the aircraft and a day in the life of a Second World War fighter pilot.

People also had the opportunity to sit in the Spitfire and have photos taken for a small fee, which will be donated to the Lytham St Annes Fighter, Bomber and Coastal Command Memorial.

Trade stands, not just for the car enthusiast, and a funfair were also on offer to keep families entertained throughout the day.

Harewood will stage another motor event, the VW Festival, on August 17 and 18. The event is one of the country’s largest VW gatherings.
