Cliff rescue for herd of goats

A dozen coastguards turned out to rescue a herd of goats which had slipped down a cliff face yesterday.

The coastguards were alerted after a farmer's wife called Humberside Police to say the herd had been attacked by two husky dogs.

She said she would have to go down the cliff at Waxholme, near Withernsea, herself unless she could get help.

A pregnant nanny goat and a baby kid were brought up manually and the rest of the herd scrambled to safety following them.

Mike Puplett, watch manager at Humber Coastguard, said: "We will always attempt to rescue animals when there is a risk persons may attempt this task. The initial goat survived the attack and looks likely to recover."
