Club in battle to stave off debts

Mounting debts mean Holbeck Working Men’s Club in Leeds is facing a fight to stay open.

Committee members at the club, in Jenkinson Lawn, are rallying to boost profits with a family fun day on Saturday, from noon, after it emerged the club owes around £65,000 in loans.

Established back in 1877, the club was reportedly close to closure two years ago due to the smoking ban hitting trade and residents from nearby tower blocks leaving the area.

Many of the club’s 200 or so members, some of which joined as far back as 1948, are now working for free at the community club to help pay off the debts.
