Coalition sees off bid to cut EU contribution

TORY MPs from Yorkshire have sent a shot across the Government's bows over the country's contribution to the European Union.

The Government saw off a bid by eurosceptics to force ministers to cut Britain's contribution to the EU budget but faced a rebellion by more than 30 coalition MPs who lined up to criticise moves in Brussels to increase the euro-budget by nearly six per cent.

They claimed it could not be justified at a time of severe economic uncertainty.

Colne Valley MP Jason McCartney was among those rebelling for the first time, along with fellow new MPs from the region Simon Reevell, Andrew Percy and Martin Vickers. Veteran David Davis, MP for Haltemprice and Howden, and Graham Stuart, MP for Beverley and Holderness, also voted against Ministers.
