Coastguard called out to 'missing person' in Yorkshire which turned out to be disposable BBQ

Coastguard teams were called out in Yorkshire today after reports of a missing person - which turned out to be an abandoned disposable barbecue.

HM Coastguard Hornsea were paged by Humber CGOC to reports of a person in distress in Mappleton.

The team conducted a search before sweeping the coastline.

The team deployed a white parachute flare to illuminate the area and to aid in assessing the current tidal conditions further along the coast.

The team were able to see in the distance a white light which appeared to be on the cliff.

Due to the distance, Withernsea Coastguard Rescue Team and Rescue Helicopter 912 were requested to assist with the search.

Hornsea Inshore Rescue were also paged to assist and officers from Humberside Police also attended.

The light initially seen by the team was found to be the remains of a still hot BBQ that had been left on the beach, north of Aldbrough.

After an extensive search of the area by all involved nothing else was found.

During this incident the team utilised life jackets, flares, torches, throw lines, maps, compass and search packs.
