College of Music starts £2m tune up

leeds College of Music has launched a multi-million pound refurbishment programme.

The college’s £2m investment includes refurbishment of studios, performance spaces, communal spaces and a major investment into the latest equipment and technology.

Work has already started on the college’s studios including five recording studios, two mixing studios, a song writing studio and surround sound post-production theatre.

It is also investing in a specialist production studio and the project will also see investment in Space, a virtual learning environment, which will help enhance life and learning for the college’s students. Space will be accessed remotely, enabling students to communicate, learn and share news, events, blogs and media content from a PC, Mac or mobile.

In addition, its library is undergoing a major refit, with cash being invested in eBooks, while the recital room is set to be fully refurbished with the addition of raked seating that offers improved acoustics and more flexible rehearsal and performance space.

Prof Philip Meaden, college principal said: “We are a very ambitious college aiming to help students achieve musical excellence with world class music facilities and equipment.

“Our major strength is in the depth and breadth of our offering, from jazz to classical and pop to music production, as it empowers students by giving them the skills to enjoy a successful career in the real world.

“We aim to give students an edge for when they leave us, whether it’s by providing the best trainers and facilities or forming exciting new partnerships.

“As a college with high ambitions, investment in the future is essential.

“It will help us increase applications from other high calibre students from around the globe so we can compete not just nationally but internationally,” Prof Meaden added.
