College offers Mother’s Day chance to see new arrivals

A COLLEGE will give visitors a chance to see lambs being born next month.

Bishop Burton College, near Beverley, is home to more than 700 pregnant ewes and many are expected to give birth around the time of Mother’s Day on Sunday, March 18.

College principal Jeanette Dawson said as well as bringing visitors closer to nature the event would also have an educational side.

She said: “We have over seven hundred ewes at the college, all of which are expected to lamb in a three-week window and the date we have chosen for the event is right in the middle of that period.

“It’s fantastic to watch a lamb being born, taking its first few steps and bonding with its mother and visitors will be able to find out all about the lambing process from our farm staff.

“The event also has a serious side too as it will enable the general public to come onto a working farm and find out about what we do and where their food comes from.”

The college will host a number of other activities including show jumping, horse “petting”, a display of farm machinery, and tours of the pig unit and the indoor and outdoor animal management units where visitors will get the chance to meet meerkats, lemurs and wallabies.

A Lambing Sunday quiz will be held for children, who may have a chance to interact with some of the lambs.

The event is being held at the college in York Road from 11am to 3pm and no dogs other than display or guide dogs will be admitted.
