Community shares its sorrow at service for tragic shopkeeper

Many people in the village where Mr Singh had his shop attended the service, sharing their grief with members of his family and friends.

For many it was the first time they had been to a Sikh temple but they wanted to show their respects.

One of them was Jean Hemmingway, of Cowcliffe. She said: "Mr Singh was so well loved and respected."

He had delivered papers to those who could not get out in the snow, she said.

Mr Singh suffered serious head injuries during a raid at his shop in Cowcliffe, Huddersfield, on Saturday, February 20, and died a few hours later.

Yesterday, police said a youth had been charged with robbery in relation to an earlier incident and a further three people had been arrested.

Inderpal Singh Randhawa, temple general secretary, said: "Mr Singh was such a genuine person, he was a friend to everybody."

People of all faiths were invited to attend yesterday's service at the temple in Springwood, Huddersfield, where Mr Singh was a regular worshipper.

They covered their heads, took off their shoes and sat down to listen to the service, which was told of further arrests.

A 17-year-old man was arrested on Saturday on suspicion of murder and robbery and yesterday a 20-year-old man and a 17-year-old man were arrested on suspicion of murder.

A 17-year-old man arrested earlier has now been charged with robbery in relation to an incident at Mr Singh's shop on Thursday, February 18 – two days before he was killed. He will appear before Huddersfield Magistrates' Court today.

Two other arrested men, aged 18 and 17, have been released without charge.
