Community shares odour ‘spoils’

MORE than 30 community groups will share the spoils of a fund for residents plagued by years of unpleasant smells from one of Europe’s biggest sewage works.

Yorkshire Water set up a £50,000 community fund as an apology to people living near the works, which opened over a decade ago at Saltend, near Hull.

A panel including councillors and parish councillors was inundated by more than 70 requests for funding totalling £190,000.

In the end they awarded money to 31 projects, giving the maximum £5,000 to Paull Village Hall which wants to install a wind turbine and to Keyingham Level Drainage Board to upgrade Hedon Haven Outfall.

Other successful bidders include Preston Charity Playing Field, which will receive £2,500 for new play equipment and youth clubs in Hedon and Preston, which will receive funding for future trips and new equipment.

Hedon councillor John Dennis, who sat on the panel, said he had had no complaints about smell this summer, suggesting that Yorkshire Water’s new £3.5 m odour control unit was working.
