Community stadium plans on show

REVISED blueprints for a multi-million pound community stadium on the outskirts of York have been drawn up after discussions were held with council officials.

The developers behind the £19.2m scheme will showcase the updated plans at a public exhibition on Saturday after talks with York Council over the original planning application.

Oakgate (Monks Cross) Limited submitted the application in September to build the sports stadium and an out-of-town shopping centre for showpiece retailers including Marks and Spencer and John Lewis. Campaigners have claimed city centre retailers will be forced to close if the Monks Cross development is approved.

But the retail scheme is vital to ensure the stadium becomes a reality as the developers will provide nearly £15m for the sports facility, which would house York City FC and the York City Knights rugby league team.

The revised plans have seen a development site removed and all-weather pitches added. Landscaping has been revised and the number of car parking spaces reduced to 1,340. The exhibition will be at the De Grey Rooms on St Leonard’s Place on Saturday between 10am and 5pm.
