Complaints over disruption as work continues on £30m Leeds cycle superhighway

City Connect started work in January on a 23km cycle superhighway to connect Bradford to Leeds city centre and east Leeds.

Coun Lowe (Armley/Labour), said: “It’s fantastic cyclists have got a safer dedicated cycling lane. However, the huge amount of disruption and personal cost to my constituents has been very high.

“Had I known at the start of the process what I know now I don’t think I would have supported the project. I think there are potential health and safety hazards which we are yet to encounter as a result of narrowing Stanningley Road, which is already a narrow road.”

Coun Lowe said Stanningley Road residents have faced problems accessing their properties, adding: “All in all the price has been a bit too high, but maybe in the long term the benefits will outweigh the disadvantages of today.”

A spokeswoman for City Connect said: “We realise the current works are extensive and somewhat disruptive to highway users however we are working to complete the 23kms of superhighway in as short a time as possible. The conditions of the Cycle City Ambition Grant from the Department for Transport also mean that the funding from them has to be spent by the end of March 2016. We are currently looking to have completed the cycle superhighway build by the end of April 2016. So we very much believe that this is short term disruption for long term gain and apologise for the inconvenience whilst we complete this beneficial scheme. The benefits of increased cycling and walking across our region outweigh the disruption.”
