Concerns the Easter holiday break could be a ‘wet and windy washout’

It is one of the busiest holiday getaways but travellers are being told to expect delays and forecasters are warning the Easter break threatens to become a wet and windy washout.

The school holidays got off to a gloomy start for families this weekend as gales and downpours lashed parts of the north and west of the country and forecasters warned the unsettled weather will continue for much of the week, and the rain could linger over the Easter weekend.

There could even be wintry showers on higher ground in parts of the North today.

The RAC said that as many as 16m motorists were set to take to the roads over Easter. It is estimated that four million will be travelling on Good Friday and around 4.5m will be on the road on Easter Sunday.

Drivers are advised to allow extra time for their journey and consider alternative routes in case of delays or congestion.

Pete Williams, RAC head of external affairs said: “This Easter is set to be a hectic one with 16 million of us getting behind the wheel for an Easter break.”

However the Highways Agency, said more than 550 miles of roadworks will be lifted over Easter on England’s motorways and major A roads.

One of the most-disrupted rail routes will be the London to Scotland West Coast main line. Works on the line between Crewe and Warrington and between Carlisle and Glasgow which will severely restrict Virgin services to northern England and Scotland.
