Concerns over Muslim charity investigated

The Charity Commission confirmed it was looking into concerns raised about a Muslim charity that organised an event whose guest speaker was banned from the UK.

The Birmingham-based Islamic Dawah Centre International (IDCI) invited Muslim public speaker Dr Zakir Naik to give a talk at the city's LG Arena, which had been due to take place yesterday.

But an Exclusion Order issued by Home Secretary Theresa May banned the speaker from coming to the UK and the event was postponed.

Worries have also now been raised over books sold by the charity via its website, it emerged yesterday.

And the Charity Commission confirmed it was looking into concerns.

A spokeswoman said: "Concerns have been raised with the Charity Commission regarding the Islamic Dawah Centre International.

"We are currently assessing these concerns in order to establish what, if any, regulatory role the Commission may have."

But yesterday the charity said the books it sold had been vetted by the authorities and none were considered "objectionable".

Spokesman Mohammed Zameer said: "All of our books are on the website; they are in the public domain.

"There is nothing that is objectionable. We've had the anti-terrorist people here and they looked at everything."
