Consultation a sham say waste site opponents

CAMPAIGNERS have claimed they were “misled, misrepresented and ignored” by the promoters of a multi-million pound waste incineration plant which is planned for North Yorkshire.

Members of the Community Liaison Group (CLG) set up by North Yorkshire County Council and AmeyCespa, an international firm selected to build the plant, have written to the company, the local authority and MPs condemning the consultations as a sham.

They also demanded that the CLG’s proceedings are not used as an indication of support for the proposed plant, which is earmarked for a site at Allerton Park between York and Harrogate.

Jon West, a member of the CLG, said: “It is clear that neither the county council nor AmeyCespa had the slightest intention of taking anything we had to say on board. The CLG has been a complete waste of time – it’s just been a cynical exercise in trying to fob off local people.”

The project director Bill Jarvis refuted the allegations and was adamant that the CLG provides an “opportunity for open discussion”. He added: “It is unfortunate that those opposed to our proposals make totally untrue statements in support of their cause.”
