Controversial BA boss among those knighted

Martin Broughton, chairman of British Airways is knighted alongside Roger Carr, chairman of energy giant Centrica and Richard Lambert, the outgoing director-general of the CBI.

Sir Roger, 64, who lives in Kensington, London, has presided over a huge increase in prices and profits at Centrica-owned British Gas and the sale of Cadbury to US food giant Kraft.

Sir Martin, 63, who lives in Oxted, Surrey, has had a busy year including strikes by BA cabin crew and disruption to flights caused by ash from the Icelandic volcano in the summer and snow and ice just before Christmas.

Less controversially, there is a knighthood for the consultant responsible for co-ordinating the care of British troops injured in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Professor Keith Porter, 61, helped turn Birmingham into a world centre for treatment of traumatic injury victims – including some requiring amputation of three limbs.

Peter Bottomley, 66, the Conservative MP for Worthing West, who was first elected in 1975, is knighted for public service.

Trevor Horn, mastermind of Frankie Goes To Hollywood's notoriously sexually explicit hit Relax, is made a CBE. Durham-born Horn, 61, has worked mainly as a producer – lately for Robbie Williams – but had a performing career with The Buggles, after writing Video Killed The Radio Star, and briefly with the Yes.

Herbert Kretzmer, 85, writer of the 1960 Peter Sellers and Sophia Loren hit Goodness Gracious Me and the English lyrics for the long-running hit musical Les Miserables, becomes an OBE. So does Richard Thompson, 61, formerly of folk-rock band Fairport Convention but a respected songwriter and guitarist on his own.

In the business world, Golfer Graeme McDowell, 31, from Portrush in County Antrim, becomes an MBE after a year in which he was first European winner of the US Open since 1970 and clinched the Ryder Cup for Europe.

Actress Sheila Hancock, 77, whose career has taken in starring roles for the Royal Shakespeare Company, a Carry On film (Cleo) and the recent West End production of Sister Act, moves up from OBE to CBE. She was married to Inspector Morse actor John Thaw until his death in 2002.

Other new CBEs include celebrated rock climber Joe Brown, 80, who was born in Manchester and now lives in Llanberis, Snowdonia, and artist Steve McQueen, 41, who directed the 2008 film Hunger, about the 1981 hunger strike by Republican prisoners in Northern Ireland, but has also produced an acclaimed series of portraits of UK troops killed in Iraq.

Anne Begg, 55, who became the first full-time wheelchair user elected to Parliament when she was returned as Labour MP for Aberdeen South in 1997, is made a Dame for services to disabled people and equal opportunities.

Rugby star Mike Catt, 39, is an OBE.

He retired from playing in May having won 75 England caps.

Historian Lady Antonia Fraser, 78, the widow of playwright Harold Pinter and author of biographies of Marie Antoinette and Mary Queen of Scots, becomes a Dame for services to literature.

Pc Ivor Macgregor, 62, who disarmed and detained a gunman who tried to kidnap the Princess Royal in 1974, receives the Queen's Police Medal for 42 years of service with the Metropolitan Police.

In the film world, OBEs go to costume designer Sandy Powell, 50, who has won Oscars for her work on Shakespeare In Love, The Aviator and The Young Victoria; Andrea Arnold, 49, director of Fish Tank; and Manchester-born Burt Kwouk, 80, who was martial arts expert Cato in the Pink Panther movies and more recently became a regular in Last Of The Summer Wine.

Howard Goodall, 52, who created the theme tunes for Blackadder and Mr Bean, is a new CBE. So is John Lloyd, 59, producer of Not The Nine O'Clock News, Spitting Image, Blackadder and QI, and former BBC Radio 4 controller Mark Damazer.

Nasa astronaut Piers Sellers, 55, who was born in Crowborough, East Sussex, and has been on three space flights, joins the OBEs.

MBEs include beekeeper Anne Buckingham, 72, of Farnham, Surrey, and Eric Sutherns, 63, master of London's Tower Bridge.
