Cookbook gives flavour of the past thanks to adverts of bygone city

Edna Rowbotham's recipe book is a fond snapshot of her past.

Granny's Yorkshire Recipes was given to her by her mother when she was a young girl and as well as mouthwatering treats the book also features adverts that tell of a bygone era.

Edna, of East End Park, Leeds said: "I don't do a lot of cooking now, but I still like to look through the book.

"One of my grandsons quite likes sweet stuff, though. One of his favourites is coconut pyramids, or coconuts haystacks as he calls them, which I'll make as a treat."

The book, which paints a picture of life in Leeds 70 years ago, was one of the Penny Postlets, produced by Yorkshire Conservative Newspaper Co Ltd, publisher of the Yorkshire Post.

Many of the businesses advertising in the book are long gone. They include Game Row in Kirkgate Market, Leeds.

Edna added: "My mum Martha gave me the book when I was still living at home. I used to do the baking when I was about 15.

"I've always kept it – I just thought it was an interesting thing.

"When you look at the adverts for the shops that used to be in Leeds. The city was lovely in those days.

"It had some beautiful shops – Hitchens; Wards; Baxters, which was a very posh shop; and, of course, Schofields."
