Coulson and Brooks freed on bail

David Cameron’s former spin doctor Andy Coulson and ex-News International chief executive Rebekah Brooks have appeared in court to face charges linked to alleged corrupt payments to public officials.

Brooks appeared first, along with former Sun chief reporter John Kay, and Ministry of Defence employee Bettina Jordan-Barber.

They spoke only to confirm their names, dates of birth and addresses during the short hearing at Westminster Magistrates’ Court yesterday.

It is alleged that Brooks, 44, and Kay, 69, conspired to pay Jordan-Barber, 39, around £100,000 for information provided to the Sun newspaper.

The three each face one count of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office.

They were all released on unconditional bail until they next appear at Southwark Crown Court on December 6.

Coulson and ex-News of the World royal correspondent Clive Goodman appeared afterwards.

They are charged with conspiracy to pay for information including a royal phone directory known as the Green Book, which contained contact details for the Royal Family and members of their households.

Coulson, 44, and Goodman, 55, face two counts of conspiracy to commit misconduct in a public office. Both were released on unconditional bail until December 6.
