Council lights up sunbed damage

WAKEFIELD Council has introduced “tanning roadshows” to show the dangers of using sunbeds and to remind people that it is now illegal for under-18s to use commercial sunbeds.

The events feature a device that allows people to see how much their skin has been damaged.

Wakefield councillor Maureen Cummings said: “The great thing about the sun box is that it won’t lie and I hope by showing the damage it is having on their skin, they will be persuaded that it is not worth the risk.”

Public health consultant Dr Graham Sutton said: “It’s important for residents to know that over-using sunbeds can be very damaging for their skin and lead to complications like skin cancer.”

UV rays from some sunbeds are 10-15 times stronger than those from the midday sun.
