Council provides erosion fund cash

A new small grants scheme has been launched for people whose homes are at risk from coastal erosion or flooding from the sea or rivers.

The fund – worth £150,000 – is also aimed at groups and businesses in the East Riding.

People are being encouraged to submit “innovative” proposals for consideration by a panel. Possible bids could include adapting a house in case of flood for example by raising the wiring for which a grant of £2,000 to £5,000 could be available. Other suggestions include installing door-boards and air-brick covers in houses at risk of estuarine flooding at a cost of between £500 and £2,000 or getting specialist advice for a business that could cost between £500 and £10,000)

The fund was approved earlier this month by the council’s cabinet as part of a number of changes to the Coastal Pathfinder project, which secured £1.2m Government funding last year.

Full application forms and guidance notes will be available at www.eastriding.gov.uk from early near month. The closing date for applications is Friday May 6. Hard copies of all forms and guidance notes are also available from the council.
