Council reveals city centre progress

The six-acre park is due for completion this winter and some fencing at the site has been removed to give people a chance to see the progress that has been made.

Bradford Council’s executive member for regeneration and economy, Councillor David Green, said: “Everyone who has passed the site recently will have seen the strides being made towards completion, including the fountains being tested, the pool being filled and trees and grassy areas being planted.

“It is great to open up the site and allow people a close look at all the work that has been carried out so far.”

Bradford Council has liaised with contractors who have now taken down the barrier fencing around the site, but the screening remains in place around the Pavilion building while work continues.

City Park contains a 4,000sq ft mirror pool and 100 fountains, including 40 low-powered fountains.

More than 60 semi-mature trees, bushes and grassed areas have recently been planted around City Park which has been created to provide a new public space in the city centre which it is hoped will attract new visitors.

City Park, which includes Bradford’s grade I Listed City Hall, will be capable of hosting large and small-scale events.

During 2012, it will be used as a focal point for national events, including the Olympic Games, as well as local diary dates such as the Lord Mayor’s Parade and St George’s Day celebrations.

Minor construction and commissioning work, including continuing tests of the laser light artwork and completion of the Pavilion building, will be finished in the New Year.

A formal opening will take place once all building work is completed and an official celebration event has been confirmed for Saturday March 24.
