Council seeks views of villagers over possible sites for travellers’ camp

A CONSULTATION has been launched over controversial new gypsy and traveller pitches in the East Riding.

East Riding Council is looking at three sites, two at Woldgate and Carnaby, near Bridlington, and another at Eppleworth Road, Cottingham.

Plans for an 11-berth site south of Moor Lane, Carnaby, have already been included in the draft local plan, despite criticism from parish councillors in Carnaby and local businesses, who say it is a “completely unacceptable location”.

An extension to a travellers’ camp on the outskirts of Cottingham has also been included in the planning blueprint, despite objections from two local parish councils.

Extending the existing site at Woldgate has now also been proposed, but of the three, it is the only site that is not council-owned, and the owner is “not supportive”.

Jon Craig, forward planning and housing strategy manager, said: “I don’t think we will have a great deal of support for any of these proposals.

“We expect a significant level of response to this and we encourage people to get involved. We need to know what their views are.”

He added: “We could go for a remote location but there’s no point if the travellers are not going to use it.”

In total 25 extra pitches are needed in the next five years to deal with overcrowding.

Only one of the two proposed sites at Bridlington will be needed.

The consultation ends on May 6.
