Counterfeit cigarette gang is sentenced

FOUR people who sold counterfeit cigarettes on the streets of South Yorkshire have been sentenced.

Police began to investigate the activities of Darren Remmington, Jennifer Saunders, Noreen Turner and Julie Dougherty in summer 2008 as part of a probe dubbed Operation Liquidate.

Around 2.1 million cigarettes were seized. Officers said the products, which were being passed off as well-known brands, were being sold on the streets of Barnsley, netting the gang profits of tens of thousands of pounds.
