Couple say ‘I do’ to Agadoo after 80s hit singer pops the question

Friends and family of Black Lace’s Dene Michael watched him conga down the isle to say “I do” to his bride at Leeds Register Office.

The 55-year-old entertainer embraced his 80s pop fame when he wed his bride Karen Andrew, 50, in an Agadoo-themed ceremony at the city’s town hall.

The alternative wedding kicked off with the congregation, including Black Lace co-star Ian Robinson and mate Bruce Jones, better known as Coronation Street’s Les Battersby, welcoming the happy couple into the room with a rendition of the barmy dance song, which reached number two in the charts in 1984 and has sound tracked many wedding dos ever since.

All the 70 guests at the wedding at 4pm on Thursday had to wear Hawaiian shirts and Hula Lei necklaces – with only the bride making an exception to the rule as she donned her white dress.

Speaking after the colourful ceremony the Mr Michael said: “Both Karen and I have been married before so we thought we should mark this occasion a little differently.

“We didn’t want the traditional wedding. It started off as a joke really, we laughed about having a Hawaiian-themed do. But we both wanted it to be a fun day, one for all our friends to enjoy, so we decide this was a perfect idea.

Dene is still touring with Black Lace and will appear at the Beat Harder festival in Lancashire this summer.
