Course gives advice to young jobless

YOUNG jobseekers are to be offered advice on how to get work in a seven-week course being run in the East Riding.

The Active8 programme will be run by East Riding Council’s employment and skills team in Cottingham, Bridlington and Goole, and will give tips on how to be competitive in the jobs market.

Advice will be given on how to perform at interview, working in a team, selling yourself effectively, and where to look and apply for jobs.

The course will be available for people aged between 18 and 24 and who have been claiming jobseekers’ allowance (JSA) or employment support allowance.

Sara Arnold, the council’s employment and skills manager, said: “Our advice to all jobseekers is that there is lots of help out there to get you into work, so take all the help that you can get. Our courses are interactive and fun and we have proven experience of getting people into jobs.”

New unemployment figures are due out today, but statistics in December showed 8.6 per cent of 18 to 24-year-olds in the East Riding were claiming JSA, compared to 8.7 per cent in Yorkshire and the Humber and 7.8 per cent in the UK.
