Crackdown on ‘unsafe’ town centre streets

POLICE ARE stepping up patrols in the heart of Rotherham following a wave of crime and disorder.

A dedicated team of officers are set to increase the number of regular patrols in the town centre, targeting hotspots for shoplifting and anti-social behaviour. A mixture of undercover and uniformed operations will have also been planned for the coming weeks.

It comes following a number of complaints from shoppers, who said they felt unsafe in the area.

Chief Inspector Richard Butterworth, of South Yorkshire Police, said: “We’re aware that there is a perception, particularly among the young teens and elderly members of our community, that Rotherham town centre is not a safe place to visit.

“Our targeted operation is designed to combat those fears, criminals and taking robust action to get them off our streets.”
