Cracking day out for visitors given a taste of the countryside at show

Thousands of people flocked to the Honley Show in West Yorkshire at the weekend.

Rabbit jumping, stunt cyclists and a stunning falconry display were just some of the delights that greeted visitors to the show ground at Farnley Tyas, Huddersfield, on Saturday.

Now in its 78th year the show, billed as one of the most prestigious, best attended and well respected rural shows in the country, attracted people from across Yorkshire and Lancashire.

Visitors were treated to an array of trade and craft stands and food as well as a countryside marquee demonstrating crafts and leisure activities linked to the countryside.

Dry stone walling, bee keeping, cookery, hedge laying and wood turning were just some of the skills people could learn more about at the show.

Chris Shaw, spokesman for the show, said: "It has been a cracking day. It was highly successful from the point of view of visitors, exhibitors and the trade stands. It has been a great family day out."

The Honley Show Society, which organises the event, aims to promote agriculture, outdoor skills and responsibility for the countryside. In recent years as well as sponsoring local schools to visit farms, the society has also provided the resources for them to set up food growing areas in their own grounds.
