Crews fight long battle to bring blaze under control

AN ELECTRICAL wholesalers was left severely damaged yesterday after a fire which took almost 12 hours to bring under control.

Firefighters from Sheffield’s Central, Rivelin, Mansfield Road, Darnall and Elm Lane stations were called to the blaze in Parkwood Road, Neepsend, shortly before 10pm on Sunday.

Crews quickly established a fire break in an adjacent industrial unit and brought the fire under control.

South Yorkshire Fire and Rescue said the building was heavily smoke logged but said nobody was believed to have been hurt.

The fire was largely extinguished by 10am yesterday and the number of firefighters present was reduced.

Parkwood Road was closed for much of the day.

Fire crews in Doncaster were also called out on Sunday night to a large fire involving three caravans on a travellers’ site in Doncaster.

More than 20 firefighters from Askern, Adwick and Doncaster stations were called to the incident in Sutton Road, Askern, at 6.40pm.

A brigade spokesman said: “Crews set up a quarter-of-a- mile water relay to feed three main jets which tackled the blaze, preventing the fire spreading to other vehicles and buildings on the site.”

Nobody was injured in the incident, but residents from up to 30 caravans and other accommodation types were moved out.

“Gas cylinders were found on the site, one of which exploded, and the cylinders were cooled before residents were able to return to their homes.”
