20 people in fight on board train from Leeds

DETECTIVES are appealing for witnesses after a fight broke out involving up to 20 people on a train from Leeds at the weekend.

One man suffered a broken nose and several others sustained cuts and bruises in the incident on board the 20.05 Northern Rail Leeds to Knottingley service as it approached Woodlesford station on Saturday.

Det Sgt Matt Davies of British Transport Police, said, “We received a report from the train’s conductor that a fight had broken out between approximately 15-20 people on the service.

“Five people, three men aged 24, 27 and 43, and two women, aged 20 and 43, all from Castleford, have been arrested in connection with the incident which has left one man with a broken nose requiring hospital treatment and a number of others with cuts and bruises.

“We understand that a group of three men and three women boarded the service at Leeds. They then became involved in an altercation that resulted in serious disorder breaking out between two groups on the train

“We are keen to speak to anyone who may have been travelling on this service who may have any information that may help us with our enquiries.

“We believe the main group left the train at Castleford where officers attended but unfortunately no-one came forward with any information at the time.”

An investigation has been launched and officers are currently speaking to rail staff on board the service and are studying CCTV.

The arrested group have been released on police bail until 19 March 2012.
