60mph mobility scooter seized in Doncaster

ENFORCEMENT officers working for a Yorkshire council have seized a mobility scooter which was fitted with a motorcycle engine and capable of speeds of more than 60mph.

Police and council staff recovered the vehicle during an operation in the Bentley area of Doncaster as part of a crackdown on the illegal use of off-road motorcycles. Residents had complained about the supercharged scooter, which had been seen racing around fields near houses, scaring wild deer and other animals. A council spokesman said it was unclear where a 24-year-old man who was caught riding the machine had got it from, but it was estimated that thousands of pounds had been spent souping it up.

Doncaster Council’s cabinet member for communities, Coun Cynthia Ransome, said: “While it may look like a lot of fun to ride, this type of noisy vehicle annoys residents immensely and terrifies local wildlife and walkers.”

Over the last three months, 40 motorbikes and off-road vehicles worth a total of £45,000 have been seized.
