A police helicopter and tracker dogs were called to the scene as passers-by came to the aid of the victims. One was said to have cuts to his chest, neck, head and back. The other had been stabbed in his side.

A witness said: “We were standing at the side of the shop and two guys came up shooting. It (the gun) was making a loud popping sound and I did not hang around and just ran.

“By the time I got back up here afterwards, one of my mates had four stab wounds. He’s still in hospital.”

Police said they believed the attack had been targeted. A police spokesman said: “Just after 6.30pm police were called to reports of an assault near to the parade of shops in Iveson Approach. Two local men, aged 21 and 23, were found with stab wounds.”

The 21-year-old was later released from hospital. The 23-year-old’s injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Witnesses are asked to call 0845 606 0606 or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
