Criminals returned to jail by Sheffield police

Police in South Yorkshire have arrested 27 criminals for breaching the conditions of their release from prison during a county-wide crime blitz.

Officers arrested 10 people on the same day they were recalled to prison as part of Sheffield’s activity, known as K2, for South Yorkshire Police’s Operation Lockdown.

A further 12 offenders were arrested within 72 hours of their recall and only one of the 28 individuals recalled since October 1 is still the subject of ongoing police action to return them to custody.

When someone has served a proportion of their jail sentence, they are released on a licence and must obey strict conditions. If they breach the terms they are recalled to prison and it is the police’s role to arrest that person and return them into custody.

Operation Lockdown brings together initiatives taking place across the county to tackle burglary and vehicle crime. So far, there have been 287 arrests and £1.7m pounds of stolen goods recovered in Sheffield.
