Drink-drive tragedy is warning to motorists

THE case of a Leeds couple killed by a drunk driver who smashed into their car at 100mph is being used to raise awareness about the dangers of getting behind the wheel while over the limit.

Failed asylum seeker Eduard Mereohra was still drunk from a party the previous night when he ploughed into a car carrying grandparents David and Dorothy Metcalf, from Tinshill, on the Stanningley Bypass on the morning of January 1 last year.

Mereohra, who was twice the legal alcohol limit for driving at the time of the crash, was jailed for nine years.

West Yorkshire Police have now released a video with details of the tragedy, including an interview with the couple’s daughter, Lindsay, as a warning about the dangers of drink- driving.

Chief Inspector Mark Bownass said he wanted viewers to be “shocked and upset by what they see and hear”.

He said: “If we stop just one person from getting in their vehicle and driving over the limit then we will have succeeded.”

Last year 2,318 people were stopped for drink driving in West Yorkshire and seven people died after drink driving collisions.
