Friends aim to raise money for permanent memorial to murdered teenager

Friends of murdered teenager Georgia Williams want to raise £1,000 to put a permanent memorial in place in her home town.

Fundraisers in the Shropshire town of Wellington have already raised more than £600 towards the cost of a bench in tribute to the 17-year-old. Georgia is believed to have been killed after going missing from home last Sunday evening.

Writing on the indiegogo fundraising page, Steve Millington, who is organising the tribute wrote: “Georgia was loved by many, and her story touched the heart of the nation. We are looking at erecting a memorial bench in her memory and to celebrate her wonderful life. This will be something that everyone that cared for her can be proud of. With your help, we can immortalise her memory.”

Plans for the bench will be discussed with Telford and Wrekin Council and any money over the fundraising target will be donated to charity.

On Saturday, more than 100 family, friends and well-wishers joined Georgia’s parents Stephen and Lynette Williams in a vigil at AFC Telford United’s ground, where Georgia worked on match days.

Mr Williams, a detective constable with West Mercia Police, said: “Georgia, you were a great girl. Thank you for being in my life. God bless you.”

Later he said: “Today is a day for Georgia and for us to meet her friends and for us all to celebrate her life.”

Jamie Reynolds, 22, was arrested in Glasgow last Wednesday and charged with murder on Friday after a body was found in woodland near Wrexham, North Wales. Police are yet to formally identify the body which was found off the Nant-y-Garth pass, but have said they believe it to be Georgia.

Reynolds appeared before magistrates in Telford on Saturday accused of murder. He was remanded into custody to appear at Stafford Crown Court on Tuesday.

Detectives investigating the murder have appealed for the public’s help to find a black leather jacket Georgia was thought to be wearing, along with a leather spotty satchel, a pink, flowered make-up bag and her Samsung Galaxy Y mobile phone.
