Homes evacuated after Scunthorpe gas pipe explosion

BUILDINGS in Scunthorpe were evacuated today after a gas pipe fractured and exploded, leaving one man with a broken femur.

Firefighters rescued the casualty from the scene on Ashby Road after the blast at 11.30am today, which has now created a gas cloud.

The man, who is thought to have been working on the gas main at the time of the incident, suffered a broken femur and was this afternoon in a stable condition in hospital.

Residential and commercial premises are being cleared while National Gas Network has an engineer on scene who is isolating the gas supply.

A statement from Humberside Fire and Rescue Service said: “It is believed work was being carried out on a gas main where a fractured pipe has caused an explosion, creating a gas cloud.

“Premises in the area are being evacuated – this includes both residential and commercial. A 200m cordon around houses in the area is in place, residents are being evacuated to The Pods Leisure Centre.

“The incident has caused an exclusion zone for safety resulting in delays in the area and police are managing the traffic.

“Road closures in place include Rowland Road, Lloyds Avenue, the junction of Ashby Road and West Common Lane, the junction of Cottage Beck Road and Queensway.”
